[INTERVIEW] 'Vanishing Time' Director Uhm Taehwa on Thoughts About Shin Eunsoo

How did actress Shin Eunsoo become the Cinderella of 'Vanishing Time'? Director Uhm Taehwa (36) gave us the answer.

The movie 'Vanishing Time' that's been released on the 16th talks about the story between the boy Sungmin (Kang Dongwon) who disappeared mysteriously in Hwano Island but returned as an adult after a few days and the girl Soorin (Shin Eunsoo) who's the only one who believes in him.

The movie is unfold by two persons' eyes. The eyes of Soorin who's living in reality, and those of Sungmin who's locked in a distorted time dimension. Just as how the story began by Soorin's reminiscence, the person who opened the door of this movie is the 14-year-old girl Shin Eunsoo. She expresses the girl who's lonely yet generous with her not-typical-at-all acting. Surprisingly, 'Vanishing Time' is her debut movie. She is the chosen Cinderella who got through the 300:1 competition rate.

Director Uhm Taehwa expressed that he saw a drama on Shin Eunsoo's face. "Her face is not just pretty, but is a face that has a story. It seems she'd be able to express the loneliness of a child who has lost her mother and lives with a strange man," said the Director. Her 'cool character' that is not shown off intentionally and her boldness were also additional reasons too.

"This was the first time she acts. So I decided to observe her during her training. For around a whole month, she tried to act from the beginning to the end of the movie every day. Fundamentally, she's a kid whose emotions are very outstanding. She's the smart style (of actors) that quickly absorbs everything after knowing a story. The growth of her acting skills was extremely quick. 'If it's her, she can definitely lead (the movie) for 2 hours,' I firmly thought to myself."

His sense proved him right. With her amazing concentration, Shin Eunsoo fused with the role of Soorin in just a short period of time. The rich sensitivity and the mysterious charm are her advantages. Looking at Shin Eunsoo's face on the big screen would make one predicts that this is the birth of another star. Just as Kang Dongwon mentioned before, she has the face that is suitable for movies with a lot of close-ups. Director Uhm Taehwa laughed, "I didn't do anything in particular. Isn't Shin Eunsoo just pretty? And the filming director filmed nicely too."

In fact, the real identity of Shin Eunsoo is a girl group trainee in JYPE. Though her debut is through a movie, she's not converting her path to become an actress yet. Director Uhm Taehwa shared his satisfaction, "We also wondered 'Is she a genius?' among ourselves."

Besides 'Vanishing Time', Shin Eunsoo is also cast as Jun Jihyun's child actress in SBS 'The Legend of the Blue Sea'. Her debut is put together through both the big and small screens. She's not an actress that gets stuck by how she's told to do, but someone who will amazes you with her sensitivity for the encounter of her character. Hidden inside her appearance that's full of aura and her cuteness, there's also her boldness. She's the one who gains the most through 'Vanishing Time'.
